CLT Airport Overlook

Mandatory place to visit for any aviation enthusiast or photographer. At most airports, you have to get creative if you want to see planes. Not here. The Overlook gives fantastic views of aircraft departing North on 36C. When 18C is in use, you have great views of landings as well as the take off roll for departures. Basically, it doesn't matter which way the wind blows, both directions are equally enjoyable for viewing and photos. You can also get great views of downtown in the distance. The Overlook faces East so you get fantastic lighting in the evening before sunset of both the planes and the airport. There is ample parking and benches to sit at, but I have noticed the Overlook has gotten considerably more popular over the years and has always been jumping anytime I visit. Check the departure schedules for when to go as you will have a constant stream of planes to watch and listen to during the busy times of late afternoon and early evening. If you have kids, they will love this place and it's free to visit.

Great place to watch planes take off and land and also taxing! Very good and close view on the runway. Big parking lot, benches available near the fence. For a pick time check the airport site for arrivals and departure time. You can spend hours watching the traffic on the.

Though I frequently fly from Charlotte, it was my first at the Charlotte Airport Overlook. I got there around noon hoping to see a non stop event (planes flying out) but I was disappointed. Also more of the planes I saw were American Airlines guess its because Charlotte is American Airlines hub, and majority are small planes. The kids loved it though. It was free entree and parking. Not sure the place have bathroom, I couldnt find any. There were few benches, luckily there were people but it better you bring your chair just in case. Overall, it a good place to relax and have picnic.

The new temporary location is not what it used to be before. Quite some distance to the runways and terminals, and no good angles for anyone interested in doing creative photography. Also lacks skyline views. Unfortunately, the new permanent location has not officially been released yet and wont be opening before mid- to end of 2024. The effort in keeping the overlook alive during the construction gets 5 stars for the airport, the location itself a mere 2.

A must do if your in the Charlotte area. Right off the runway may e about 75 people or so, food trucks there om Fri, sat? Sun, very fun as we packed a charcuterie and had BBQ. We could have done the night for free however wanted to support the food truck just brilliant.
